I'm sending through a bridge lead vox sketch for you via email. I envision it having the piano arpeggio behind it somehow. The recording is positioned where I think the bridge should be - after the second verse, prior to the last chorus. Let's see what you think.
I'm also sending you two new vox recordings, recorded as similar as I could. I changed the 'but beyond' to 'yet beyond' and that that works well on the ears and meaning wise.
Ok I got MOST of this imported into the DAW. Seemed to line up prety well. I wanted to check your intention as to the place for the bridge you've introduced. So I made this mix as what I thought about. See how this jibes with ya:
NOTE: I am not sure of anything. The first time you did the chorus those words are fine. After that I did the tweaks on the last part. it sounds fine to me now. Until the next time I second guess my ear. LOl
I love what you've done here, Freddy! The verb and solos are sounding great. I like the grades ending too and agree about the organ. I might send you a little re-sing of one part because I don't like my vibrato on the voice. Then, I'll move to recording harmonies. One thought... I think it will sound better without the predator & prey. Can we delete those words?
It put Halfway There at the top of the list above. It did that automatically, but it took a minute to show. I found a script that does that and put it in. I think it's working. I will send some more in a bit to test.
Hi Freddy, I've added two files - last verse vox re-record and some initial harmony ideas.
I also have a thought for us... can we make the drums a bit more prominent or 'harsher' somehow? I think that the lyrics require a bit 'heavier' sound to match the meaning. If we put the vox slightly back into the mix with a heavier percussion sound, I think it'll sound cool. What do you think?
Ok lets give it a try. This uploader is easier than the sharing of links huh? It takes 5 minutes for the page to update but I got notified by email immediately. I am putting this upload system on all the pages. Success!
Yes... I love this mix, Freddy! Everything's lifted and the voice blends well. I especially like the guitar solo and the bass sound great to. I feel like I need to do more with harmonies. What do you think?
I thought you did well with the harmonies except I felt like you ended the scales with verbetim notes. Murkey and Hazey felt like the same notes as the the lead.
This is not really so much a mix as it is arrangement test. I did adjust the mix because you requested it, but we are not really in MIX mode yet. The vocals are a bit hard to hear in places, but as I said it's not a formal mix. I did some volume envelopes because some of your phrases are much lower than others. To answer your question, yes this last part helped a good amount.
I guess maybe you use email for these coorespondence, but it takes you to the comments page to respond. Didn't know if you knew this but every "comments" page has a link to open the whole project page, included embedded comments. It's the tiny word "link' just under the big red text. Here's a pic of what I am talking about. Thought this might be helpful for you to go to the project pages quickly.
What you've done to fatten it us is remarkable Laura. It totally changed my mind about the other track. Almost like you knew what you were doing or something. LOL I like it. The complaint about the verbetim disappeared with the last upload. Remarkable.
Hi Freddy. Can't wait to hear the cymbals! Yes, this has been so much fun. I'm really glad that we started working together again. It gives me great happiness. Can you please delete the harmonies on preying for our future? It doesn't sound right there with that additional harmony... sorry. Ok, so now I'm wondering about some of your original ideas about putting Jesus loves me behind somewhere in the mix. What do your think? Shall we try it? What did you envision? We are certainly getting there and this has done my soul a world of good. Thank you.
Hi again... A few thoughts.. Do i need to do something for murkey and hazey or is it ok? Also, in the last section of verse about Lori, can you do something to soften the last night note? I still hear too much vibrato or something, but don't think it's severe enough for a re-sing. What do you think?
Actually those criticisms disappeared (for me) when we added this last harmony. Just that one spot on praying for our future is what flags my ear. The rest sounds good to me. Where is there room for "Jesus Love The Little Children". Maybe before the song begins?
Ok, great. Yes, let's get rid of the Harding on the praying for our future. Could we somehow add the 'Jesus loves the little children' in harmonica as part of an intro and maybe again in the outro at the end? I think that could be really cool.
Before I do that, let's try adding another part to it and fatten it up like you did the other. I think rather than killing it, let's add one more and see what happens? We are talking about that one phrase. And what if we found a telephone voice on that phrase?
Wow what amazing and truthful lyrics!!! It amazes me how much influence the evangelists have in America. They have hoodwinked so many sadly to believe and donate to THEIR cause. It and they are truly sickening and now they are in the Presidents pocket! It's frightening!
Back to the music.... Fred you have a lovely instrument and Laura the melody and lyrics compliment the instrumental really well. I look forward to hearing the final result.... Well done everyone!!!!
So it'd be a harmony in the middle on that phrase added to what we have and then mixed, it might do the trick. I saw this happen with my own eyes earlier. I was underwhelmed at first, but the additional part brought it to life. Bet it happens again. 🛀
I did a quick master of that last mix and put it in a player at the top of the page, just to hear the difference. You can stop one player and jump to the other and hear the difference immediately. 👨🦳
Hi. Oh Freddy... It's sounding really great! Exciting stuff indeed. Ok, a few ideas here for you: could we overlap the harmonica and start of the intro by a few beats and du you think you could add some harmonica fills throughout? Lastly, I think we are better off taking out the extra harmony line on praying for our future. If that possible still? Wow Freddy, you are amazing... The mastered mix has a really good sound.
I didn't play this harmonica. I would have to do a good amount of work to make them overlap and not be a total train wreck. How about if I do a drum roll into the start of the track? Yes I will delete that harmony in the one last place. I really don't think there is room for anything else now. It's quite full❓
WOW! I really love the intro. One small request: can we move the drum roll forward by one beat so that the final beat is aligned with the last beat of the harmonica? It may not be the right move, but it would be interesting to hear it that way as well.
I'm just about to upload two files: an mp3 of the latest mix with some trial harmonica bits I just recorded and a WAV of the harmonica by itself. It may be too full, but I thought I'd give it a 'blow' here on the G harmonica in the basement just to hear how it fits.
I'm glad to see you uploaded a mix too so I can use it for alignment. I can't move the drum roll up, but I can move the harmonica back. The drum roll is connected to the grid (metronome), so I can't really move that. Moving the harmonica so it hits like that is doable.
Maybe because it's dry. I will try adding a bit of verb, and try mixing it. I personally don't like it against the guitar solo. Just feels like a distraction, but some of that could work. Just my opinion.
I took your suggestion to have them transition on the beat, and I lowered the pitch (key) of the harmonica a half step. It slowed the timing down just a little too which made for a rather smooth transition. A combo of your idea and mine? And now on to the harp.
Imported harmonica stem. Prelim checking for location. Started with drums after intro. Is this correct for "where" we hear things? Right click and open in new window 👉🏼LINK
Hi Freddy, in the most recent file, the intro timing sounds perfect to me! For the harmonica trial alignment, the first harmonica bit goes right after the first 'oh lord'. I think that you can hear the placement on the MP3 I uploaded. There shouldn't be any harmonica during the guitar solo at all. In general, I'm not sure if the bits I recorded add or distract. Let's see what you think.
Hi Freddy. This is totally correct! Yes, you are also right that there's a bit of heinous at the end too. We can always delete what we don't like, including everything if it distracts rather than adds!
I don't mind the harmonica Laura. You notice I did remove it on the end under the lead near the end. It does not bother me as is. Kind of feels like a continuation of the intro, which I figured was your intent. I have rendered new stems and I am taking it to finl mix/master. OH BTW..... the new uploading system I have installed, I have had good luck transferring this upload system to other members. I gave them the forms I used and they now have it for their own personal studio pages where people upload directly to them. If you are curious, I could give you a copy to use as you wish. Even if you don't make use of it right now, it's a good resource to have. If you want to try it I am sure I can give you a copy of this for future use. Ok I am moving ahead with the final. We always have the otion to go back into "arrangement" mode if we feel the need. I like it.
2nd Final Mastered Mix. ogle.com/open?id=13V8OplRH2dL9p6vxKe260VFFhhT9Cebz 2nd final mix. Worked on sibilance of vocal maybe a little more low end, and vox up just hair in the mix. Right click and open in new window LINK
The sibilance I am trying to tame is on the word "box" in the phrase "wooden alms box". I've had no effect on it with plugins. I have a plugin that is supposed to help sibilance, but no good yet. I am wondering if you maybe were to close to the mic. or maybe you didn't use a pop screen? If I got rid of that I'd be totally happy with this.
Hi Freddy. I think that this mix sounds amazing! I did use a pop filter, but may have gotten to close to the mix on the word. It didn't disturb my ears when listening though... I can re-record if you think it'd be best.
Let me give my tools a good try. It's basically just that one word. I wonder if you just re-sung that word a little bit back from the mic if I could put it in and fix this. But I'd also like to figure out how to use my tools to tame that. A good engineer should be able to tame this. Do you hear it now that I pointed it out? Only on the word "box". Sam Dixon said that if I had not pointed it out he would not have gone to it with his ear. So I am basically trying to gage this. Not sure of anything.
That last mix I linked (now in the page player) was an attempt but I think it made no difference. I was using a DAW that I am not that familiar with. I should try it using Sonar which I am experienced at. I used reaper which is quite foreign to me so maybe i didn't apply it correctly (de-es) plugin.
I am thinking to maybe try both. Have you just re-sing that one word and send it to me, and I'll work on this de-es routine too. As an engineer I should be able to do better on this. It's common problem for engineers.
If it helps get context for pitch re-sing the whole phrase. I only need the one word but as a vocalist it might help you to do an entire phrase for melody.
I've had people telling me that the word box is not a problem in this last mix Laura. As I am not sure of my ear on this. If you are happy with this last mix I am.
Hi Freddy. Sorry that I didn't answer sooner! I can do a re-sing if you like, or we can go with this mix. I don't really hear the difference in test weird, but either us good fit me. Which seems better to you?
Multiple people (including you) have said they were not flagged by that word. I can take "yes" as an answer. Let's call this one finished, and we'll begin the next soon. Looking forward to more great interactions for FLY! 💖
Hi Freddy, I'm just about to upload the graphic in JPEG and PDF formats. I had fun drawing and painting it. FLY is alive again! Such, such fun... thank you.
Hi Laura. Hope you like this new page setup.
ReplyDeleteHi Freddy,
ReplyDeleteI love the new look:).
I'm sending through a bridge lead vox sketch for you via email. I envision it having the piano arpeggio behind it somehow. The recording is positioned where I think the bridge should be - after the second verse, prior to the last chorus. Let's see what you think.

ReplyDeleteAre these emails coming to you?
ReplyDeleteHi. I've checked the notify me box now. Looking forward to hearing if you like the bridge ideas.
ReplyDeleteYou should now be seeing email from these comments.
ReplyDeleteI am verifying what you said about the metronome. Need sans.
ReplyDeleteI could go ahead and try assembling this even with click on the mix. It should not stop progress.

ReplyDeleteOh that ending is just a place keeper for now
ReplyDeleteMaybe i should insert that chorus one more time (total of 3) on the end? And then we can come up with an ending.
ReplyDeleteOk I updated the latest mix with this lead contender.

I chose this lead to show you first, because I think it keeps with the darkness of the track. I have a couple others to show.
ReplyDeleteOh Freddy... I love the electric guitar solo!!
ReplyDeleteCool. Ok so should I add another round of chorus on the end? And we'll go to vocal harmonies too right? 💝💥
DeleteI will demo these other leads too, in case something else works. Giving us choices.
ReplyDeleteWell looking at these other leads they don't compare for fit. I think we have our guitar. I will come up with an ending.
ReplyDeleteI added some more on the end and tried a fade to see how this file:

Telephone meaning they trash the vocal purposely, to sound like telephone.

ReplyDeleteI agree the mix sounds good. People I've shown this to say it's a hit. FLY is back in their stride! I am enjoying working with you again sister!
ReplyDeleteIf it helps get context for pitch re-sing the whole phrase. I only need the one word but as a vocalist it might help you to do an entire phrase for melody.
ReplyDeleteI would think 6 inches from the mic. I should be able to adjust differences here. We've done this before with decent results (punchin).
ReplyDeleteA short re-sing may be the most direct and most practical approach, but I would like to get a handle on this de-es routine.
ReplyDeleteI've had people telling me that the word box is not a problem in this last mix Laura. As I am not sure of my ear on this. If you are happy with this last mix I am.
ReplyDeleteHi Freddy. Sorry that I didn't answer sooner! I can do a re-sing if you like, or we can go with this mix. I don't really hear the difference in test weird, but either us good fit me. Which seems better to you?
ReplyDeleteMultiple people (including you) have said they were not flagged by that word. I can take "yes" as an answer. Let's call this one finished, and we'll begin the next soon. Looking forward to more great interactions for FLY! 💖
ReplyDeleteI will need that graphic you said you have for this Laura, so I can put this baby to rest. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHi Freddy, I'm just about to upload the graphic in JPEG and PDF formats. I had fun drawing and painting it. FLY is alive again! Such, such fun... thank you.
ReplyDeleteOk the page has been updated with your graphic.
ReplyDeleteCool... Right, what's on the lineup next then Freddy? This was great fun.
