  1. Laura, do you have a MIDI file for this sketch? If so can you post it? Thanks.

  2. Hi Freddy. Sorry for the delay... I've only ticked the box just now! I only have an Audi file for this one right now, to not can convert to midi and upload it tomorrow.

  3. I see your vocal upload here Laura. Will listen shortly.

  4. Let's see what you think. It's unconventional for a reason. The theme is actually not love, rather creativity and inspiration.

    1. Unconventional I can see. I like it. Not quite sure the big picture yet but I like what I am hearing. Do you have parts in MIDI format?

  5. Btw, I couldn't remember how to make the piano track into pan flute, but weeks like it be so. I re-recorded the piano/pan flute to have the line down one octave.

  6. If you have any of your work in MIDI format that would be the way to change the timbre.

  7. Right now, everything is in audio format, even the percussion loops. I'll have a careful look tomorrow and upload some individual files once I have the own flute back. The general idea is that vox on the verses is placed like fills to represent that the human responds to creative inspiration, rather than the other way around. Then, the chorus would be more in sync, ideally with the vocals singing a harmony part to the pan flute. The chorus lyrics are meant to describe the feeling one has while creating, like the idea of flow, and how everything seems to make sense at that time. The lyrics were originally inspired by the word 'sketch' in the current title... Haha. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes...I think that it could develop into something very intriguing.

  8. Hi Freddy,

I did a bit more work on this today and have uploaded a new overview mp3 for you to have a listen. All of the files are audio and the pan flute is from my keyboard as I discovered I also did the first time. I can't seem to remember how to record midi with my set up! Anyhow, have a listen and see what you think. If we want to move forward with this slightly strange idea, I'll upload the individual files. Let me know what you think when you've time.

    1. This new mix seems to gel more. I am speaking intuatively here now so don't take this litterally. I mean it might be something as simple as mix. In places the panflute seems to step on the vocal. Might also need some ducking (if you agree about this assessment). Ducking meaning might need to mute in places to let the vocal come through. Just my first impression. This new mix does seem to give it more shape though. so when I give these feedbacks, it doesn't mean it's bad. There are many ways to achieve any given goal. So in general I kind of feel like the vocal needs to be given more priority in the arrangement. Kind of like it competes with the vocal. And I would say only in certain places. So if I could get these stems I might try some "ducking". These might be big files so only the drums need to be stereo. The rest should be mono to cut down on filesize.

You know I am a Mac user now right? I do still mostly use windoze but that is mostly from habit. I probably have the same DAW you are using and could help you with MIDI routines. Garageband? Logic? I also have a fully paid for copy of Propellerhead Reason 11 on my macbook pro. I might be able to help you find this routine again. It's connected to your keyboard right?

  9. Hi Freddy. I completely agree with you! This sketch is still in the 'mapping it out' phase and the balance is totally wacky 🤣. I'm thinking that there should be a second verse, solo, chorus, outro... All still to be developer and added on. I was hoping that you might have some ideas for instrumentation, solos, ect. Oh Freddy, it's such fun to be writing with you again. I missed you!

  10. And with regard to the set up, I'm 'using' logic Pro in my Mac with partial memory of how things work... Haha! I'd love any tips or help you could offer, of course. The piano, mic are connected through a Fast Track pro box.

  11. Well we are "mapping" out the phrasing too then I hope and so maybe this phrasing of the panflute, can take into account for the vocal melody. Part of why this gels more in this mix has to do with definition of the vocal melody. We need to continue the development with the vocal in mind. Sure I'd love to try developing this around the vocal. I'm predictable in this approach, and if you think about it the vocal dictates all the mapping. It is "THE' criteria for this fleshing out. THAT is why my feedback. The panflute flagged my ear (I believe). So in the interest of getting on the same page, I will put that last mix in the player on the page and give you a clock time, just so we are in agreement. I don't think all of the panflute is competetive (for listener focus) but in a few spots I am sure of it? So let's get specific and it should point the way?

  12. I am enjoying seeing things develop too. We have worked together so much, you are probably able to tell me what I am going to say next. It is an excellent distraction indeed!

    ReplyDelete
  13. That sounds like a great way forward. I'm looking forward to further developing this together. I'll listen and give this another go tomorrow. I'm so lucky to have you in my life, Freddy.

  14. Well I think in general these things work the same. You'd start by setting the tempo, then insert a blank MIDI track. You arm that track to record and hit record. It should record what you play. You can also enter MIDI with the mouse on the editor. Probably a combination of both of these. Play the part and then edit to fine tune. We're both lucky. We make a good team. I am enjoying this too. Much love.

  15. I am also a Logic Pro X user. Let me look at that routine, but I probably wouldn't change most of the advice on HOW. These all work the same. Blank MIDI track then arm.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi Freddy,

Thanks for the advice. The problem I'm encountering if that I can create the midi track, see that it's working, but can't arm it for recording for some reason.

You'll see that I uploaded a new overview, with an attempt to blend the pan flute and vox a bit better. The vox still need work in the chorus, but the focus was on blending here. Let me know what you think.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Improving all the time. I am liking this! What is the exact version of logic you have?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Cool... So you still hear interference between the own flute and vox anywhere?

    I've got Logic Pro 10.6.0.

    ReplyDelete
  19. So what title should we give this track Laura?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm happy that nothing is flagging your ears with the new blend. The vocals certainly need a bit of work to be better in tune - yikes! I'm not sure about the title yet. At first, I thought to call it 'Sketch' but now I am not sure. What are the next steps then? I suppose that we should think about what comes next structure-wise. At present, I hear the song as having an intro, verse, chorus and then adding a solo of some sort, bridge, chorus and outro. It could be ok without a verse as well, not sure. Should I upload the files individually or work forward on the structure a bit first?

    1. Paste in your lyrics (at present). Of course we can add to them. I am thinking to read as i listen will suggest a good title, but really it's your call. Doesn't even need to be from the lyrics. A feeling you have as you sing/write. We can leave it as "sketch", until you decide. Putting things on the pages are more to keep them safe, rather than making it final. We can change anything at any time. I will listen some more. I think your layout of the arrangement works. If something else pops up we can say. Nice!

  21. It flows nicely AROUND the vocal! Very good!

  22. You said with ending but seems like the mp3 stopped abrubtly?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Freddy,

Had another go at singing the chorus a bit more in tune, added a solo and another chorus, uploaded all files (including an overview). Let me know what you think!

  24. Lyrics at Present

    VERSE

The words they seem to evade me
Yet the canvas has thoughts to bind
Lines they seem to define me
    Color speaks my mind

    CHORUS

When I'm with you everything glow
Night and day they meld into one
When I'm with you energy flows
    I'm finally whole
    Whole and home

  25. Hi there....

You are right, the ending is very abrupt! We'll have to add a better outro for sure.

I feel like it's going in the right direction, you? What's next in your opinion?

    Guitar?

  26. BTW, the chorus word 'glow' should read 'glows'

    1. I'll fix that. You said you can supply MIDI? That would help me a lot. Your drum track, and the MIDI for bass and panflute, and the vocal stem. I will assemble them, and this will help me a lot to find parts to offer up.

      Delete
    2. So send me those, and we'll proceed. As usual, I will be about letting the vocal dictate the whole thing.

  27. The single midi files should all be in the upload section now!

  28. Hi Freddy. Just had great fun playing around with harmonies on this weird composition. They aren't perfect, but might have potential. I like the intro idea, I think. Have listen and let me know your thoughts!

    1. WIll do Laura. I see your upload and will have a listen! ☮

  29. Ok I have the last mp3, the drums, bass, and panflute (3 mid files). I will assemble this much, and then come back for the rest. Beginning to assemble a project based on your mix.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I opened these MIDI files. The drums were fine and worked. The other two had no midi data saved that I could see.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Had a listen to your harmony sketch. I really like this! Well done! I feel like all the parts are gelling now. I might tweak the harmonies in a place or two, but most of that was on the money! Very nice! I will put this mix in the player on the page. Get those two MIDI files fixed and I will work on assembly again. 💖

  32. Sounds good, Freddy. I have no idea why the files were blank. I am just listening to this and wondering if this song needs to be taken in a different direction. I really love the genome of the ooo vox on the intro, a more bluey, jazzy, soul-filled sound. Then, comes this straight pan flute, clear lyrics, plain flute, etc. Could we try to soul this up? Would you be able to try a different solo with more jazzy soul-filled sound? My piano playing isn't good enough to do so... What do you think? Can you 'hear' the idea or not really?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes these ideas are good. Let's get the MIDI routines down and I will move on your ideas.

  33. Oh, and live, jazzier drums by Freddy would certainly be in order. The bongos might still got fit though. I think the bass can also stay. Let me know you thoughts:)

  34. Hi, Freddy. I'm a midi file failure! I have uploaded the missing tracks as audio. I hope that we can do something with them, at least. Sorry!

  35. I have Bass Line#08 merged.aif now. WIll look for panflute.
